According to the CIA World Fact Book (January 2020), there are 267 ‘World Entities,’ defined as ‘Independent States’ (e.g. USA, Canada, etc.), ‘Other’ (Taiwan, EU), ‘Dependencies and Areas of Special Sovereignty’ (e.g. Hong Kong, Guam, Puerto Rico, etc.), ‘Miscellaneous’ (e.g. Antarctica, Gaza Strip, West Bank, etc.), and ‘Other Entities’ (5 oceans plus the world as a whole).
